this is not a hot take. this is a public health issue that the UFC and every other promotion continues to ignore.
the average UFC fighter cuts 15-25 pounds of water weight in the week before a fight. some cut 30+. they dehydrate themselves to the point of kidney stress, hormonal disruption, and impaired brain function — then they go get punched in the head 24 hours later.
the science on weight cutting and brain trauma:
- a dehydrated brain has less cerebrospinal fluid cushioning it from the skull. source: British Journal of Sports Medicine
- fighters who cut more than 10% of their body weight show measurable cognitive decline in post-fight testing. source: Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition
- two fighters have died from weight cut complications in the last 5 years in regional promotions
proposed solutions:
- same day weigh-ins (fighters wont cut if they have to fight at that weight)
- hydration testing (ONE Championship does this with specific gravity tests)
- walking weight classes with weigh-ins 30 days and 7 days before the fight
- eliminate the biggest weight classes and add more divisions so fighters dont have to cut as far
why nothing changes:
- the UFC benefits from size mismatches that create exciting fights
- fighters believe cutting gives them an advantage (it does, temporarily)
- the culture is deeply ingrained — "everyone does it so i have to do it"
this is the concussion crisis of MMA. we will look back in 20 years and be horrified that we let this continue.
what do you think the solution is?
DFW coaches and fighters: what does the local scene look like for weight cutting? are gyms here educating fighters on safer approaches or is it still the old school sauna and trash bag era?
