weight cutting in MMA needs to end — the science is clear and fighters are dying

this is not a hot take. this is a public health issue that the UFC and every other promotion continues to ignore.

the average UFC fighter cuts 15-25 pounds of water weight in the week before a fight. some cut 30+. they dehydrate themselves to the point of kidney stress, hormonal disruption, and impaired brain function — then they go get punched in the head 24 hours later.

the science on weight cutting and brain trauma:

  • a dehydrated brain has less cerebrospinal fluid cushioning it from the skull. source: British Journal of Sports Medicine
  • fighters who cut more than 10% of their body weight show measurable cognitive decline in post-fight testing. source: Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition
  • two fighters have died from weight cut complications in the last 5 years in regional promotions

proposed solutions:

  1. same day weigh-ins (fighters wont cut if they have to fight at that weight)
  2. hydration testing (ONE Championship does this with specific gravity tests)
  3. walking weight classes with weigh-ins 30 days and 7 days before the fight
  4. eliminate the biggest weight classes and add more divisions so fighters dont have to cut as far

why nothing changes:

  • the UFC benefits from size mismatches that create exciting fights
  • fighters believe cutting gives them an advantage (it does, temporarily)
  • the culture is deeply ingrained — "everyone does it so i have to do it"

this is the concussion crisis of MMA. we will look back in 20 years and be horrified that we let this continue.

what do you think the solution is?

ONE Championship has the right system and the UFC needs to adopt it. hydration testing eliminates extreme cuts. fighters compete closer to their natural weight and the fights are safer AND better because athletes perform better when properly hydrated

the problem is game theory. if my opponent is cutting to 155 and im walking around at 155 naturally, hes going to be bigger and stronger than me on fight night. so i HAVE to cut too. its a prisoners dilemma that only rule changes can solve

counterargument: its the fighters choice and body autonomy matters. BUT — when the culture pressures every fighter to cut and the alternative is fighting at a size disadvantage, is it really a choice?

fighters dying from weight cuts in regional shows where there is zero medical supervision is criminal. the commissions need to step up. blood is on their hands

same day weigh ins would fix this overnight. nobody is cutting 20 pounds if they have to fight 4 hours later. the 24 hour rehydration window is what enables the extreme cuts

DFW coaches and fighters: what does the local scene look like for weight cutting? are gyms here educating fighters on safer approaches or is it still the old school sauna and trash bag era?
