Keeping DFW informed and accountable.
fighters dying from weight cuts in regional shows where there is zero medical supervision is criminal. the commissions need to step up. blood is on their hands
This hits different if you've been in DFW for 10+ years.
the competition argument is fair. if you want to win IBJJF worlds youre probably not training at Octagon. but if you want to learn BJJ, get in shape, compete at NAGA, and have a good time, its absolutely sufficient
Bayside having the lowest rate makes sense. The neighborhood has basically two ways in and out, and most streets are not through-streets. Hard to steal and escape quickly.
Real talk right here. No sugarcoating.
The Bayside kayak launch is unofficial but well-used. I've never had any issues accessing the water there. The water on that side is calmer because it's more protected from the open lake wind.
Octagon MMA in Arlington also does open mats on Saturdays. they have multiple locations so check which one
I-30 and 635 interchange should be classified as a war zone. The construction has been "temporary" for 4 years now. Texas DOT has no urgency.
the production quality of LFA on Fight Pass is surprisingly good. if you cant make it in person the broadcast is worth watching
The community response in the days after was unlike anything I've experienced. People I'd never met showed up with chainsaws, generators, and food. A woman I didn't know brought warm clothes for my kids. Rowlett came together in a way that changed how I feel about this city permanently.
The food scene in Houston is so deep. This is a good conversation to have.
Interesting perspective. I see it differently from the Fort Worth side.
Can confirm most of these. The one near Deep Ellum is top tier.
The crystal lagoon at Sapphire Bay solving the water quality question is actually a smart selling point. You get the lake for boating and fishing, and the lagoon for swimming. Best of both worlds if they deliver.
This is exactly the kind of conversation I come here for. Real local takes.
The San Antonio food scene is seriously underrated. We don't get enough credit nationally.
grappler winning the main event is the right call. everyone wants to see the KO but grappling beats striking more often than not when the grappler has solid takedowns. MMA math is undefeated
White bass run at the dam in March is insane. I caught 30 in two hours last spring using a white grub on a jig head. Limit is 25 per day so I had to stop and start releasing.

I'm a transplant from Chicago. Moved to Rowlett 3 years ago and didn't know anyone. Went to the Christmas parade our first year and something clicked — this is a community, not just a suburb. We were hooked.
San Mames in Rockwall is worth the 10-minute drive. Better coffee than anything in Rowlett right now and the space is designed for people who want to sit and work.
Been thinking about this all week. Good timing on the post.
For anyone on a budget: the older complexes on 66 aren't all bad. I lived in one for 2 years while saving for a house. $950 for a 1BR, no major issues. Just tour the specific unit before signing and check for water damage, pests, and working AC.
the novice division is perfect for first time competitors. you fight other people with similar (limited) experience. its not like youre getting thrown in with someone who has 50 amateur bouts
my advice for first timers: focus on cardio and pressure. technique matters less than you think in your first fight because the adrenaline makes everything sloppy. the person who pushes forward and has gas in the third round usually wins
I teach in GISD and the district gets unfairly judged by its overall rating. The Rowlett campuses perform well above the district average. We get the same curriculum and support as the highest-rated GISD schools.
