Rowlett to downtown Dallas commute — every route compared with real timing data

I've commuted from Rowlett to downtown Dallas for 6 years using every possible route. Here's actual timing data, not Google Maps estimates.

Route 1: I-30 West (the obvious one)

  • Distance: 22 miles
  • Morning (leave 7:00am): 40-55 minutes
  • Morning (leave 7:30am): 50-70 minutes
  • Morning (leave 6:15am): 25-30 minutes
  • Evening (leave 5:00pm): 45-65 minutes
  • Evening (leave 6:30pm): 30-40 minutes
  • Bottleneck: The I-30/I-635 interchange is where dreams go to die. Every morning, every evening.
  • Best for: Direct, no tolls, most predictable (predictably bad).

Route 2: PGBT to US-75 South

  • Distance: 28 miles
  • Morning (leave 7:00am): 35-45 minutes
  • Evening (leave 5:00pm): 40-55 minutes
  • Toll cost: ~$4-6/day ($80-120/month) depending on TollTag vs ZipCash
  • Bottleneck: US-75 south of 635 gets congested but moves. Nothing like I-30.
  • Best for: Consistent timing. If your job docks you for being late, this is the route.

Route 3: PGBT to I-635 to I-30

  • Distance: 26 miles
  • Morning: 35-50 minutes
  • Evening: 40-55 minutes
  • Toll cost: ~$3-5/day (PGBT portion only)
  • Bottleneck: 635 southbound to I-30 interchange
  • Best for: Middle ground between cost and time.

Route 4: DART Blue Line

  • See my DART guide post. 37 minutes to Akard. Every time. No traffic variable.
  • Cost: $96/month or ~$4.80/day
  • Best for: Consistency, productivity, and sanity.

Route 5: Surface streets (66/Lakeview to Garland to Dallas)

  • Distance: 20 miles
  • Morning: 45-60 minutes
  • Best for: Nothing. Don't do this. Every light on 66 will be red.

My recommendation by priority:

  1. If your office is near a DART station: DART. Not close.
  2. If you must drive and can afford tolls: PGBT to 75.
  3. If no tolls: I-30 but leave before 6:30am.

Real cost comparison (monthly): | Route | Gas | Tolls | Parking | Total | |-------|-----|-------|---------|-------| | I-30 | $150 | $0 | $200 | $350 | | PGBT/75 | $175 | $100 | $200 | $475 | | DART | $20 | $0 | $0 | $116 |

I-30 and 635 interchange should be classified as a war zone. The construction has been "temporary" for 4 years now. Texas DOT has no urgency.

Pro tip nobody talks about: if you work flexible hours and can do 6am-3pm, the Rowlett commute is actually great in both directions. It's the 7-9am and 4-7pm windows that destroy you.

The real cost of driving that nobody calculates: stress, car maintenance, insurance premium based on mileage. DART saves money you don't even think about.

The PGBT to 75 route is my daily driver. Yeah the tolls hurt but I get to work at a predictable time every single day. I-30 is a coin flip between 40 minutes and 90 minutes.

Left at 6:15am this morning on I-30. Door to door in 28 minutes. Left at 7:15 yesterday. 62 minutes. That one hour difference in departure time is everything.
