Rowlett Parks & Rec fitness programs — the cheap alternative to gym memberships

The Rowlett Community Centre at 5300 Main St runs a bunch of fitness programs that most residents don't even know about. I started going last year and they're genuinely good.

Current programs (Spring 2026 schedule):

Group Fitness Classes (included with $25/mo fitness membership):

  • Yoga — Tuesdays & Thursdays, 9:00am and 6:30pm
  • Zumba — Mondays & Wednesdays, 5:30pm
  • Boot Camp — Saturdays, 8:00am (this one is no joke — the instructor is a former Marine)
  • Water Aerobics — MWF, 10:00am (pool included)
  • Silver Sneakers — Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10:30am (for 55+, covered by many Medicare plans)

Youth Programs:

  • Youth swim lessons — 8-week sessions, $60 for residents. Ages 3-12. Fills up fast — registration opens first Monday of each quarter.
  • Junior basketball league — Fall season registration opens August 1
  • Summer day camps — $125/week for residents. Structured activities 9am-3pm. Extended care available until 6pm for extra $40/week.

Aquatics:

  • Lap swim: 6:00-8:00am and 12:00-1:00pm, M-F
  • Open swim: Saturdays 1:00-5:00pm, Sundays 1:00-4:00pm
  • Pool pass: $5/visit or included with fitness membership
  • The outdoor splash pad at Community Park is free and open Memorial Day through Labor Day

Senior Programs (55+):

  • Chair yoga — Wednesdays 2:00pm (free with senior membership)
  • Walking group — meets at Pecan Grove Park Tuesdays 8:00am
  • Line dancing — Fridays 10:00am. This is actually incredibly popular. 30+ regulars.

How to sign up:

  • In person at the Community Centre front desk
  • Online at rowlett.com/parks (ActiveNet portal)
  • Rowlett resident ID required for resident pricing — bring a utility bill or driver's license with Rowlett address
