If you live in Rowlett and your eyes aren't watering from December through May, you're either not human or you've cracked the code. The DFW allergy corridor hits Rowlett especially hard because of the tree cover near the lake.
The Rowlett allergy calendar:
- December-February: Mountain cedar. Blows in from central Texas. The "cedar fever" is real — low-grade fever, fatigue, sinus pressure. Rowlett gets it slightly less than Austin but it's still bad.
- March-April: Oak and elm pollen. This is peak misery. The cars turn yellow. The lake breezes push pollen straight through neighborhoods off Dalrock and Miller.
- April-May: Grass pollen starts. Overlaps with tree pollen for two weeks of absolute hell.
- September-November: Ragweed. The fall allergy season that everyone forgets about until their nose reminds them.
What actually works (tested personally):
- Flonase (fluticasone) — Start 2 weeks BEFORE your season begins. This is key. It's preventive, not reactive. OTC at any Kroger or Walmart in Rowlett.
- Zyrtec (cetirizine) — Best all-day antihistamine for DFW allergies specifically. Less drowsy than Benadryl. Generic from Costco is $14 for a year supply.
- Nasal rinse (NeilMed) — Gross but effective. Rinse after being outside. Physically removes pollen from your sinuses.
- Air purifier — HEPA filter in the bedroom. Run it at night. Made a massive difference for me. Got a Levoit from Amazon for $80.
What doesn't work (or not enough on its own):
- Local honey — pleasant but the science doesn't support it for actual allergy relief. Source: NIH meta-analysis.
- Claritin — weaker than Zyrtec for DFW tree pollen in my experience and most allergists I've talked to agree.
- Suffering in silence — this is what most Rowlett residents do and it's not necessary.
Local allergists:
- Allergy & Asthma Associates (Rockwall, 10 min from Rowlett) — Dr. Morrison does allergy testing and immunotherapy (allergy shots). Accepts most insurance.
- Family Allergy & Asthma (Garland location, 15 min) — Faster appointments, good for kids.

I live off Dalrock near the lake and March is UNLIVABLE without medication. The oak pollen literally coats everything. My black car turns green.
