I've had memberships at all four major gym options in Rowlett at different points. Here's the honest comparison.
Planet Fitness (Lakeview Pkwy near Dalrock)
- Price: $10/mo Classic, $24.99/mo Black Card
- Pros: Cheapest option. Clean. Open 24/5 (closes Friday midnight, opens Monday 5am). Hydromassage beds on Black Card are legitimately nice after a long day.
- Cons: No free weight section to speak of. Smith machines only. If you're serious about lifting, this isn't it. The lunk alarm is annoying even as a concept.
- Crowd level: Packed 5-7pm weekdays. Empty at 6am and after 9pm.
- Parking: Plenty in the shopping center lot.
Anytime Fitness (Rowlett Rd)
- Price: ~$40/mo, varies by commitment
- Pros: True 24/7 access with key fob. Has a real free weight area — squat racks, benches, dumbbells up to 100lbs. Small group training available.
- Cons: Smaller facility. Can feel cramped during peak hours. Only 2 squat racks — you will wait.
- Crowd level: Moderate. Regulars are friendly. Morning crew is mostly retirees, evening is after-work crowd.
- Parking: Small lot, can be tight at 5:30pm.
CrossFit Rowlett (Industrial area off 66)
- Price: $150-175/mo
- Pros: Community is unmatched. You'll know everyone's name in a week. Programming is solid. Coaches actually correct your form. Strength + conditioning combo.
- Cons: Expensive. Classes are scheduled — no drop-in-whenever flexibility. Can be intimidating for beginners but they run an on-ramp program.
- Crowd level: Classes are 12-16 people. Morning 5:30am and evening 5:30pm fill up fastest.
Rowlett Community Centre Fitness Room (5300 Main St)
- Price: $25/mo for Rowlett residents ($35 non-resident)
- Pros: Cheapest full gym in Rowlett. Has cardio machines, free weights, and a pool. Senior fitness classes are excellent. Your tax dollars built it — use it.
- Cons: Equipment is dated. No AC in the weight room on hot days (brutal July-September). Limited hours compared to 24/7 gyms.
- Crowd level: Light. You'll rarely wait for anything.
- Parking: Huge lot, never an issue.
Bottom line: Planet Fitness for budget cardio. Anytime for serious solo lifting on a budget. CrossFit for accountability and community. Rec center for the best value per dollar.
Don't sleep on the rec center pool. Lap swim in the morning is basically empty. I go at 6am three days a week and I've never had to share a lane.
