Mental health therapists in Rowlett and east DFW — who's actually accepting patients

Finding a therapist who's accepting new patients right now is almost harder than the thing you need therapy for. I spent three weeks calling offices in Rowlett and the surrounding area. Here's what I found as of March 2026.

Currently accepting new patients in Rowlett:

  • Lakeshore Counseling (Rowlett Rd) — Individual and couples therapy. Accepts BCBS, Aetna, Cigna. Wait for first appointment: 2-3 weeks. They have evening slots.
  • Rowlett Counseling Center (Dalrock Rd) — Specializes in anxiety and depression. Takes most major insurance. Wait: 1-2 weeks. They explicitly take teens, which is hard to find.
  • Dallas Behavioral Health (technically Garland but 10 min from Rowlett) — Offers both therapy and psychiatry under one roof. Good if you need meds + talk therapy. Wait for psychiatry: 4-6 weeks.

Telehealth options that work in Texas:

  • Cerebral — Psychiatry + therapy, fully remote. Takes some insurance, cash pay is $85/session. Source: cerebral.com
  • BetterHelp — Cash only ($65-90/week). No insurance but convenient. Quality varies wildly by therapist.
  • Headway (headway.co) — This is the hack. They match you with therapists who take YOUR insurance. Found 3 options in the Rowlett/Rockwall zip code in minutes.

The availability crisis is real:

  • Most solo practices in Rowlett are booked 6-8 weeks out
  • Psychiatrists (for medication management) are the worst — 2-3 month waits
  • If you're in crisis, don't wait: 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988)

Tips for finding a therapist faster:

  • Call Monday mornings when cancellation slots open up
  • Ask to be put on the cancellation list — you'll get called if someone drops
  • Psychology Today's therapist finder filtered by Rowlett, TX is the best starting search tool

Dallas Behavioral Health in Garland is solid. Having the psychiatrist and therapist in the same office means they actually communicate about your care. That's rare.

Headway is the real answer here. I was spinning my wheels calling offices and getting voicemails. Headway matched me with a therapist in Rockwall who takes my UHC and I had my first session in 8 days.

PSA: if you work for a company with an EAP (Employee Assistance Program), you usually get 6-8 free sessions. Most people forget they have this benefit.

Rowlett Counseling Center on Dalrock has been great for my teenager. Finding someone who takes teens AND insurance was almost impossible until we found them.

The 988 lifeline is not just for suicidal thoughts — you can call for any mental health crisis. They helped me through a panic attack at 2am and connected me with a local follow-up.
