Grocery comparison in Rowlett — Kroger vs Walmart vs Aldi vs Tom Thumb

I bought the same 25 staple items at all four Rowlett-area grocery stores in the same week. Here are the actual numbers.

The basket: Milk (gallon), eggs (dozen), bread (white), chicken breast (lb), ground beef (lb), rice (2lb bag), pasta (lb), canned tomatoes, bananas (bunch), apples (3lb bag), onions (3lb), butter, shredded cheese, yogurt (6-pack), cereal, coffee (can), OJ (half gallon), chips, salsa, frozen pizza, paper towels (6-pack), trash bags, dish soap, laundry detergent, and toilet paper (12-pack).

Results:

  • Aldi (nearest: Garland, 10 min): $78.31
  • Walmart (66/Lakeview): $86.47
  • Kroger (Lakeview Pkwy): $97.12 (with digital coupons: $88.40)
  • Tom Thumb (Dalrock/66): $108.55

Category winners:

  • Cheapest produce: Aldi (bananas $0.25/lb vs $0.59 at Tom Thumb)
  • Cheapest meat: Walmart (chicken breast $2.49/lb vs $3.99 at Tom Thumb)
  • Best quality produce: Kroger — their Simple Truth organic section is excellent
  • Best bakery: Tom Thumb — you pay more but the fresh-baked bread is legit
  • Best house brand: Aldi's "Simply Nature" organic line beats every store brand on price

Store-specific notes for Rowlett:

Kroger (Lakeview Pkwy):

  • This Kroger is well-maintained. Produce section was recently expanded.
  • Digital coupons save 10-15% if you load them every Wednesday
  • Fuel points at the Kroger gas station make it more competitive
  • Self-checkout lines are usually faster than staffed lanes

Walmart (66/Lakeview):

  • The remodel made it better but it's still a Walmart. Produce quality is inconsistent.
  • Walmart+ pickup is free and genuinely saves time. Order the night before, pull up at 8am.
  • Prices on household goods (paper towels, detergent, trash bags) are the lowest here.

Tom Thumb (Dalrock/66):

  • Most expensive across the board but the store is clean, staff is helpful, and it's rarely crowded.
  • Their Wednesday senior discount (55+) is 10% off total bill. That brings prices in line with Kroger.
  • Deli and bakery are the best in Rowlett. The fried chicken is better than it has any right to be.

Aldi (Garland, 10 min drive):

  • No Aldi in Rowlett proper — the closest is in Garland off Belt Line
  • 10-15% cheaper than anywhere in Rowlett on the same items
  • Smaller selection but what they carry is good quality for the price
  • Bring your own bags. Bring a quarter for the cart. You know the drill.

Bottom line: Do your bulk staples at Walmart or Aldi, your fresh produce at Kroger, and save Tom Thumb for when you need something specific or you want a pleasant shopping experience.

Tom Thumb Wednesday senior discount is the one day that store makes financial sense. My parents go every Wednesday and save 10% on a $150 cart. That's $15/week or $60/month.
