UT campus area guide: Where to live, eat, and hang out around the Forty Acres

The UT campus area (West Campus, North Campus, and the Drag) is its own world. Here's the guide whether you're a student, staff, or just want to visit.

West Campus (student housing central):

  • Dense apartment complexes. Most UT students live here. Walking distance to campus.
  • Rent: $1,200-1,800/mo for a 1BR in a newer building. Older units can be found for $900-1,100.
  • Party scene is concentrated on Nueces, San Gabriel, and West Ave. Thursday through Saturday is loud.
  • Food: Kerbey Lane Cafe, Torchy's, and a dozen late-night options for students.

The Drag (Guadalupe St):

  • The commercial strip along the west side of campus. Bookstores, coffee shops, food.
  • Hole in the Wall — Live music venue since 1974. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Gary Clark Jr. played here.
  • Spider House — Cafe, bar, patio. Eclectic crowd. Good for studying during the day, music at night.

North Campus:

  • Quieter than West Campus. More grad students and young professionals.
  • Hyde Park is adjacent — tree-lined streets, bungalows, a community feel.
  • Duval Street — Epoch Coffee, Asti Trattoria, Hyde Park Bar & Grill. The more adult version of campus life.

Parking: Don't drive to campus. Parking is $20+/day and garages fill by 9 AM. Take the bus (Cap Metro routes 1, 3, and 7 all serve campus) or bike. CapMetro is free for UT students with a student ID.

West Campus is where you learn to function on 4 hours of sleep. The Thursday night noise starts at 10 PM and doesn't stop until 3 AM.

Hole in the Wall is a national treasure. The amount of musical talent that's played that tiny stage is staggering.

Hyde Park is the sleeper. Quiet, walkable, beautiful homes, and still close to campus. It's where the professors live.

Free CapMetro for UT students is the most underused benefit. Half my classmates drove to campus and paid for parking. Just take the bus.
