been training at Mohler MMA in dallas for 2 years now. heres my honest, comprehensive review.
location: harry hines area in dallas. not the prettiest neighborhood but the gym itself is solid. plenty of parking.
disciplines offered: BJJ (gi and nogi), MMA, wrestling, muay thai/striking. the BJJ program is the bread and butter.
the coaches:
- Travis Lutter (head BJJ coach) — former UFC fighter and black belt. the man knows jiu jitsu at the deepest level. his teaching style is detail-oriented and he has patience with beginners while also challenging advanced students
- the rest of the coaching staff is solid. multiple black belts for BJJ, experienced striking coaches
pricing: approximately $150-180/month depending on your contract length. pretty standard for DFW. no hidden fees that ive experienced.
mat space: good sized mat area. can get crowded during peak evening classes but morning and lunchtime classes are more open.
the culture:
- this is the best part. the gym has a competitive team but the hobbyists are valued equally. you wont get looked down on for not competing
- the upper belts roll with the white belts regularly and dont just use them as punching bags. there is genuine teaching during rolls
- diverse age range. people in their 20s through 50s all training together
competition team: strong. mohler students compete regularly at NAGA, IBJJF, and local tournaments. the team does well.
open mat: saturdays 11am-1pm. well attended. visitors welcome.
pros:
- legitimate high-level coaching from a UFC veteran
- welcoming culture that retains students
- good schedule with morning, lunch, and evening classes
- reasonable pricing for the quality
cons:
- the location isnt glamorous
- evening classes can be packed
- the facility is functional but not fancy. if you need a modern luxury gym this isnt it
who its best for: anyone who wants legit BJJ and MMA instruction in a no-BS environment. good for beginners, competitors, and everyone in between.
overall: 8.5/10 — the coaching quality and gym culture more than make up for the facility being a bit rough around the edges.
the no-BS environment is accurate. nobody cares what gi brand you wear or what your belt level is. show up, work hard, be a good training partner. thats the whole vibe
