Gracie Barra is the largest BJJ organization in the world with over 900 schools globally. GB Dallas follows the global system. this is the most polarizing gym review i can write because people have STRONG opinions about GB.
the Gracie Barra system:
- standardized curriculum worldwide. every GB school teaches the same techniques in the same order
- you wear Gracie Barra branded gear. GB gi, GB rash guard, GB patches. this is mandatory, not optional
- the belt requirements are standardized. there is a minimum time at each belt level
- classes are structured: warm up, technique (2-3 moves), drilling, live rolling
the case FOR the GB system:
- consistency. if you travel and drop into a GB in any city, you know what youre getting
- the curriculum is technically solid. it was designed by Gracie family members and refined over decades
- the structure is GREAT for beginners. you are never lost because the path is clearly defined
- the organization provides resources, marketing, and business support that independent gyms dont have
- community. GB has a global brotherhood. the red shield means something to people who train there
the case AGAINST the GB system:
- the mandatory gear requirement feels like a cash grab. GB gis are $150+ and you need at least 2. you cannot wear non-GB gear in most schools
- the curriculum can feel restrictive for advanced students who want to explore their own game
- creativity and individual style development can be suppressed in favor of the standardized system
- some GB schools restrict cross-training at other gyms (this varies by location)
- the franchise feel. some people want a unique gym with personality, not a chain with a global brand
GB Dallas specifically:
- the instruction is solid. the coaches are experienced and the technique quality is high
- the facility is clean and well maintained
- they offer gi, nogi, and fundamentals classes
- the community is welcoming, especially for beginners
- kids program is well established
pricing: standard DFW range ($170-200/month) PLUS gear costs which add up.
who its best for:
- beginners who want structure and clarity
- people who like being part of a global organization
- families with kids (the kids program is one of their strengths)
- people who value consistency over individuality
who should look elsewhere:
- advanced grapplers who want freedom to develop their own game
- people who already own gis they love and dont want to buy new ones
- people who dislike brand-mandatory environments
overall: 7.5/10 — technically solid, well organized, but the franchise model and gear requirements arent for everyone.
the cross-training restriction depends entirely on the professor at each school. my GB professor was totally cool with us visiting open mats elsewhere. ive heard of other GB schools where its practically forbidden. ask before you sign up
