The Franklin BBQ line: Is it still worth the 4-hour wait in 2026?
Aaron Franklin's brisket has been called the best in the world. The line starts at 6 AM for an 11 AM opening. People bring chairs, coolers, and card games. The question every Austin resident and tourist asks: is it worth it?
- Brisket: Yes. It's the best brisket I've ever eaten. The bark, the smoke ring, the moisture, the flavor. It's perfect. This isn't hype. It's the truth.
- Pork ribs: Underrated. The pork ribs at Franklin are world-class.
- Sausage: House-made. Excellent. The espresso sausage link is unique to Franklin.
Gracie Barra Dallas — the GB system: love it or hate it, heres what to expect

- you wear Gracie Barra branded gear. GB gi, GB rash guard, GB patches. this is mandatory, not optional
- the belt requirements are standardized. there is a minimum time at each belt level

Lake Ray Hubbard with dogs — where they can swim, where they can't
Lake Ray Hubbard is Rowlett's backyard. But the rules for dogs at the lake are confusing because different sections are managed by different entities. Here's the actual breakdown.
- Rowlett Creek trails — The trails that follow the creek toward the lake allow leashed dogs. Some of the best walking in the city.
- Rowlett Creek where it feeds into the lake — Calmer water, usually cleaner than the main lake. Popular spot for dogs who like shallow wading.
- The Shores — any HOA beach areas — Private property. HOA rules prohibit dogs on the beach sections.

Fishing Lake Ray Hubbard — species guide, best spots, and seasonal tips
I've fished Lake Ray Hubbard from the Rowlett side for over 15 years. Here's everything I know.
- Best season: March-May (spawn) and October-November (fall feed)
- Best baits: Texas-rigged soft plastics (watermelon/red flake), spinnerbaits in stained water, topwater in early morning May-September
- Best season: Year-round, but May-August is peak. Night fishing in summer is productive.
Texas heat survival tips for people who aren't from here
Your first Texas summer is going to be a shock. Here's what got me through mine.
- Hydrate before you're thirsty. By the time you feel thirsty you're already dehydrated. Keep water with you always.
- Car prep matters. Windshield sunshade, tinted windows, and a remote start if your car has it. Your steering wheel at 3pm is a branding iron without a shade.
- Plan around the heat. Outdoor stuff before 10am or after 7pm. Midday is for indoor errands and AC.

I work remote 3 days a week and my apartment is making me lose my mind. Need to find good spots to work from.
- Reliable wifi
- Outlets (this eliminates 90% of places)
- Staff that won't glare at me for being there 3 hours
