Lost pet alert system for Rowlett — how to find your pet fast

Your pet got out. The clock is ticking. Here's the exact playbook for Rowlett, in order of priority.

First 30 minutes — do these immediately:

  1. Walk your neighborhood calling their name. Most pets are within a 3-block radius. Bring their favorite treats or a squeaky toy. If it's a cat, check under porches, in garages, and up trees.

  2. Post to these Facebook groups (in this order):

    • "Lost & Found Pets — Rowlett, TX" (most active, 8K+ members, posts get seen fast)
    • "Rowlett Community Group" (15K+ members, broader reach)
    • "Lost & Found Pets of Rockwall County" (covers the east side of Rowlett)
    • "Rowlett Texas Residents" (another active local group)
  3. Post on Nextdoor — Select "Lost & Found" category. Nextdoor pushes lost pet alerts to nearby neighbors automatically. Include a photo, last seen location, and your phone number.

  4. Post on Pawboost (pawboost.com) — Free listing that cross-posts to social media and sends alerts to local subscribers.

First 2 hours:

  1. Call Rowlett Animal Shelter — 972-412-6219. Open Mon-Fri 10am-6pm, Sat 10am-4pm. Located at 4402 Industrial St. They intake strays daily. Give them a description and your contact info even if they don't have your pet yet.

  2. Check surrounding shelters:

    • Garland Animal Services — 972-205-3570
    • Rockwall Animal Adoption Center — 972-771-7750
    • Dallas Animal Services — 214-670-5111 (if your pet could have traveled far)
  3. Drive to Rowlett Animal Shelter in person. Shelters are understaffed. A photo identification in person catches pets that a phone description misses.

First 24 hours:

  1. Put their bed, your worn clothing, and water outside your front door. Pets navigate by smell. This works especially well for cats.

  2. Make flyers — Name, photo, last seen location, your phone number. Post at: Kroger on Lakeview (community board near entrance), Rowlett Library (bulletin board), PetSmart on 66 (they allow lost pet flyers), Community Centre.

  3. Check microchip registration — If your pet is chipped, make sure your contact info is current at the chip company's website. When someone takes a found pet to ANY vet or shelter, they scan for chips.

Microchip scanning locations in Rowlett:

  • Rowlett Animal Shelter (free scanning)
  • Rowlett Veterinary Clinic (will scan walk-ins)
  • PetSmart (most locations have scanners)

The Facebook group "Lost & Found Pets — Rowlett, TX" reunited me with my cat in 6 hours. Someone two streets over had taken her in thinking she was a stray. Post there FIRST.
