Lake Ray Hubbard with dogs — where they can swim, where they can't

Lake Ray Hubbard is Rowlett's backyard. But the rules for dogs at the lake are confusing because different sections are managed by different entities. Here's the actual breakdown.

Where dogs CAN go (leashed):

  • Paddle Point Park — Dogs allowed on leash on all trails and shoreline areas. This is the most dog-friendly lake access in Rowlett. Paved trails plus natural shoreline. Parking is free.
  • Rowlett Creek trails — The trails that follow the creek toward the lake allow leashed dogs. Some of the best walking in the city.
  • Sapphire Bay boardwalk area — Dogs allowed on leash on the public boardwalk and green spaces. The restaurants in Sapphire Bay vary — some have dog-friendly patios.

Where dogs CAN swim (with caveats):

  • The shoreline near Paddle Point Park — Dogs wade in here regularly. There's no explicit "no dogs in water" sign. The bank is gradual and the water is shallow for 20+ feet out. Most dog owners use the area south of the kayak launch.
  • Rowlett Creek where it feeds into the lake — Calmer water, usually cleaner than the main lake. Popular spot for dogs who like shallow wading.

Where dogs CANNOT go:

  • The Shores — any HOA beach areas — Private property. HOA rules prohibit dogs on the beach sections.
  • City swimming areas/beaches — If the city designates a public swim beach (Sapphire Bay may have one), dogs will be prohibited for health code reasons.

Water safety for dogs at the lake:

  • Blue-green algae warnings — Lake Ray Hubbard has had algae blooms, especially August-October. The North Texas Municipal Water District posts advisories. If the water looks green/murky or has a paint-like scum on the surface, keep your dog OUT. Algae toxins can be fatal to dogs within hours.
  • Check: ntmwd.com for water quality alerts
  • Don't let your dog drink lake water — Bring fresh water. Lake water can cause GI issues even without algae.
  • Life vests for dogs — Not all dogs are strong swimmers. The lake has currents near the dam. A $25 dog life vest from PetSmart on 66 is cheap insurance.
  • Rinse after — Lake water + Rowlett heat = skin infections. Rinse your dog off when you get home.

Bring your own water bowl and fresh water. Every time. My vet told me that lake water is the number one cause of doggy diarrhea she sees in summer. Just bring a bottle.

The Rowlett Creek feeder area is calmer and cleaner than the main lake. Better for dogs that are nervous in open water. Shallow and gentle current.

The algae warnings are SERIOUS. My neighbor's dog drank lake water during a bloom last August and had to be rushed to the emergency vet. She survived but it was $3,000 and touch and go for 48 hours. Check ntmwd.com before you go.

My golden retriever lives for Paddle Point. The area south of the kayak launch is the unofficial dog swimming spot. Weekend mornings there are usually 5-6 dogs playing in the water.

Sapphire Bay patio restaurants that are dog-friendly: check each one individually. Last time I went, the seafood place let us sit outside with our dog. The burger place did not.
