Dog parks in Rowlett — official and unofficial spots where your dog can run

Rowlett isn't the most dog-park-rich city in DFW, but there are spots if you know where to look.

Official off-leash area:

  • Community Park Dog Park (8100 Community Park Ln) — The only official, fenced off-leash dog park in Rowlett. Separate areas for large and small dogs. Has water fountains (dog-level ones), benches, and double-gated entry. Ground is mostly dirt/gravel — gets muddy after rain. Best times: early morning before 9am and evenings after 6pm when it's not 100 degrees. Parking lot is right there.

Unofficial spots where dogs run (use judgment):

  • Pecan Grove Park (4000 Pecan Grove Ln) — Technically leash required but the back section near the creek is where regulars let dogs off-leash early mornings. Not endorsing it, just reporting reality. If animal control rolls through, leash up.
  • The trails along Rowlett Creek — Leash required but long stretches where you won't see another person. Great for dogs that need to walk forever.
  • Paddle Point Park (near the DART station, lake access) — Not off-leash but the trails and lake views make it a great leashed walk. Dogs love the smells near the water.

Leash laws:

  • Rowlett City Ordinance requires dogs on leash in all public areas except the designated dog park. Fine is $200+ for off-leash violations. Animal control does patrol Community Park and Pecan Grove.

What Rowlett needs:

  • A second dog park, honestly. The Community Park one serves the whole city and it's small for a city of 70,000. I've heard talk at city council meetings about adding one near Sapphire Bay but nothing concrete.

Nearby alternatives:

  • Bratonia Park Dog Park (Garland) — 15 minutes from Rowlett. Larger, better maintained, has turf instead of dirt.
  • Harry Myers Dog Park (Rockwall) — 12 minutes. Shaded, well-maintained, and right next to a great walking trail.

Harry Myers in Rockwall is worth the 12-minute drive. Shaded, clean, and the regulars are friendly. My dog's favorite place.

Pecan Grove early morning crew — you know who you are. Best part of my day is coffee and watching the dogs play by the creek at 6:30am.

Rowlett absolutely needs a second dog park. One park for 70,000 people is not enough. Bring it up at the next city council meeting — they do take public comments.

Paddle Point Park is beautiful for a leashed walk. The section near the DART station has great lake views and there's usually a breeze. My dog and I do it every Sunday morning.

The Community Park dog park gets SO muddy after rain. Bring a towel for your car. I learned that the hard way when my golden retriever turned into a mud monster.
