Best vets in Rowlett/Rockwall area — ranked by pet owners

Finding a good vet matters. Here's every option in the Rowlett/Rockwall area ranked by the people who actually bring their pets there.

Tier 1 — Highly recommended:

  • Rowlett Veterinary Clinic (Rowlett Rd) — Dr. Layton has been practicing in Rowlett for 20+ years. He's old school in the best way — thorough exams, explains everything, doesn't push unnecessary procedures. The front desk staff knows every pet by name. Prices are mid-range. My dog literally doesn't shake when we walk in, which says everything.
  • Lakeview Animal Hospital (Lakeview Pkwy) — Newer clinic, modern equipment. Great with cats specifically. Dr. Rivera is phenomenal with anxious animals — she takes her time and lets them settle. Digital X-rays and in-house lab mean faster results.

Tier 2 — Solid options:

  • Rockwall Veterinary Hospital (Rockwall, 10 min) — Larger practice with multiple vets. Emergency hours on Saturday until 2pm. Good for anything complex — they have specialists who rotate in for orthopedics and cardiology.
  • VCA Animal Hospital — Rowlett (Dalrock Rd) — Part of the VCA chain. Corporate feel but the individual vets are good. Biggest advantage: VCA CareClub monthly plan covers preventive care and can save money if you stay consistent.

Tier 3 — Use with caution:

  • Banfield (inside PetSmart on 66) — Fine for basic vaccinations and wellness plans. But I've had them miss things that my regular vet caught immediately. The revolving door of vets means you rarely see the same person twice. Use for convenience, not for anything serious.

Emergency/after-hours:

  • VCA Metroplex Animal Hospital & Pet Lodge (Irving, 30 min) — 24/7 emergency vet. Not close but this is where you go at 2am when your dog ate something it shouldn't have.
  • BluePearl Pet Hospital (Richardson, 25 min) — Emergency and specialty. Expensive but excellent for urgent situations.

Costs comparison (approximate, routine annual visit):

  • Wellness exam: $55-75
  • Vaccines (core): $80-120
  • Dental cleaning: $300-500
  • Spay/neuter: $200-400

Dr. Layton at Rowlett Vet Clinic is a legend. He's been taking care of my family's dogs since 2008. When our 14-year-old lab was at the end, he came in on his day off for us. That's the kind of vet he is.

Banfield missed a tumor on my dog that Rowlett Vet Clinic found on the first exam. I'll never go back to Banfield for anything beyond a nail trim.

Lakeview Animal Hospital is great with cats. My cat is a nightmare at the vet and Dr. Rivera somehow handles her without anyone getting scratched. That alone is worth the price.

VCA CareClub is worth doing the math on. For puppies especially — the monthly plan covers all the first-year vaccines and 2 exams. Saved us about $300 over paying a la carte.

For emergencies — BluePearl in Richardson saved my dog after she ate rat poison. $2,800 bill but she's alive. Keep their number in your phone: 469-733-1400.
