The best sunset spots on Lake Ray Hubbard — local photographer's guide

I've been photographing sunsets on Lake Ray Hubbard for 6 years. The lake faces roughly west-southwest from the Rowlett shore, which means sunset views are spectacular from multiple vantage points. Here are the best ones, ranked.

1. Paddle Point Park — the classic Why it works: Unobstructed western view across the open lake. The fishing pier extends into the water and provides a perfect foreground element. During winter months, the sun sets directly over the water. During summer, it sets slightly to the right (northwest) but the colors still reflect beautifully.

Best spot: The end of the fishing pier, or the shoreline rocks just south of the pier. Best time: 20 minutes before sunset through 15 minutes after. The sky often peaks 5-10 minutes after the sun drops below the horizon. Parking: Free, but the lot fills up on nice evenings. Get there 45 minutes early on weekends. Photo tip: Wide angle lens, low position to capture the pier leading lines. Include silhouettes of people fishing for scale and story.

2. Bayside promenade — the elevated perspective Why it works: The walking path along the Bayside waterfront is slightly elevated above lake level, giving you a broader view. The Sapphire Bay construction site adds an interesting foreground (it'll change as development progresses). On still evenings, the water reflects the sky perfectly.

Best spot: The midpoint of the promenade where there's an overlook area with benches. Best time: Same window as Paddle Point. Photo tip: Panoramic shots work beautifully here. Use a phone's pano mode or stitch multiple frames.

3. PGBT bridge overlook — the dramatic angle Why it works: The PGBT bridge across Lake Ray Hubbard is one of the most recognizable structures in DFW. Photographing sunset with the bridge as a subject (from the shore, not FROM the bridge — no stopping on the bridge) creates a uniquely Rowlett image.

Best spot: The shoreline area accessible from Bayside, looking southeast toward the bridge. In late fall and winter, the sunset light illuminates the bridge cables. Photo tip: Telephoto lens (200mm+) compresses the bridge and sunset beautifully.

4. Waterview Marina area — the intimate shot Accessible to Waterview residents and their guests. The marina with boats in the foreground and sunset beyond is a classic composition. Mast silhouettes against orange sky.

5. Pecan Grove Park — the quiet alternative Fewer people, more peace. The view is partially obstructed by trees along the shore, but that natural frame can be beautiful. Wildflowers in the foreground during spring add color.

Seasonal guide:

  • Spring (March-May): Sunset around 7:30-8:15 PM. Wildflowers, green grass, pleasant temperatures. Best overall season for sunset photography here.
  • Summer (June-August): Sunset around 8:15-8:45 PM. Dramatic thunderstorm clouds create incredible color but the heat is intense. Mosquitoes emerge at dusk.
  • Fall (September-November): Sunset around 6:15-7:30 PM. Cooler temperatures, clear skies, excellent colors. My personal favorite season.
  • Winter (December-February): Sunset around 5:30-6:15 PM. Low sun angle creates the longest, most dramatic light. The lake can be misty, adding atmosphere.

Summer mosquito warning is real. If you're going for sunset photography in July or August, bring bug spray or you'll be eaten alive. DEET, not natural repellent. The lake mosquitoes don't mess around.

I take my dog to Paddle Point for the sunset walk every evening. It's become my daily decompression. The combination of water, sky, and space is therapeutic. Rowlett residents don't appreciate how special lake access is until they leave.

The PGBT bridge at golden hour is incredible when photographed from the right angle. I got a shot last November that looked like something from a travel magazine. The cables glowing in sunset light against a purple sky.

I proposed to my wife on the Bayside promenade at sunset. She said yes. This spot has real magic.

Fall sunsets on the lake are the best. October and November — cool enough to be comfortable, clear enough for good color, and the sun angle is low enough to get that golden light for a long time.

The end of the Paddle Point fishing pier at sunset is legitimately one of the most beautiful spots in all of DFW. I've lived in Dallas for 20 years and nothing in the city compares. The sky goes full orange-pink-purple and the water mirrors it.
