NRG tailgating is a different beast than AT&T Stadium. The lots are massive, the setups are insane, and the heat in September will destroy you if you're not prepared.
The best lots:
- Teal Lot — The premium tailgate lot. RVs, massive setups, generators running full smokers. This is where the serious crews camp. Gets wild. Arrive 4+ hours early.
- Blue Lot — Best balance of proximity and atmosphere. $50 parking. Shorter walk to the stadium than Teal.
- Yellow Lot — Budget option. Further out but still has a good tailgate scene. $30.
What to bring:
- A canopy. Non-negotiable. September and October games can be 95 degrees at noon. The asphalt radiates heat.
- A cooler with twice the ice you think you need. It melts fast.
- A portable fan. Battery-powered or clip-on. You will thank me.
- Bug spray. NRG is near the bayou. Mosquitoes show up at dusk.
Food moves:
- Fajitas on a flat top griddle. This is Houston. Sizzling fajitas with onions and peppers is the power move.
- Crawfish boil if you have the setup and the crew. Takes more work but everyone in the lot will come say hello.
- Brisket if you started the smoker at 4 AM.
Post-game:
- Stay for 45 minutes after the game. The Kirby Dr. and Fannin exits are gridlocked for an hour. Crack a beer and wait it out.
