Competition prep tips from a blue belt who just won his first tournament

Won gold at my first tournament last weekend after losing badly at my first one 6 months ago. Here's what changed:

  1. I picked 3 techniques and drilled them exclusively for 4 weeks. A takedown, a guard pass, and a submission. That's it.
  2. Trained with the spazziest white belts I could find. If you can handle their chaos, competition adrenaline is nothing.
  3. Cut weight slowly over 2 weeks instead of 3 days. Felt strong on comp day instead of drained.
  4. Warmed up WAY more than I thought I needed to. I was sweating before my first match.

The biggest difference was having a game plan. First comp I just "went with the flow." This time I knew exactly what I wanted to do from every position.
