Hockey 101 for DFW: A beginner's guide to understanding the Stars

DFW is traditionally a football/baseball town. But the Stars have been building a fanbase. If you're hockey-curious, here's everything you need to know.

Basic rules in 60 seconds:

  • 3 periods of 20 minutes. Most goals wins.
  • Offsides: Can't enter the attacking zone before the puck.
  • Icing: Can't dump the puck from your side past the opponent's goal line.
  • Power play: When the other team gets a penalty, you play 5-on-4 for 2 minutes.

Stars basics:

  • Arena: American Airlines Center (shared with Mavs)
  • Conference: Western Conference, Central Division
  • Stanley Cup wins: 1 (1999, the Brett Hull "foot in the crease" goal)

Why Stars games are awesome:

  • Tickets are cheaper than Cowboys/Mavs ($25-50 for upper deck)
  • The arena is intimate and LOUD
  • Hockey is genuinely the most exciting live sport. The speed is unreal in person.

Pro tip: sit lower level behind the glass at least once. When players hit the boards 3 feet from you, it's a completely different experience.

I went to my first Stars game last year knowing nothing about hockey. It's now my favorite live sport. The speed is insane.
