Plumbing apprenticeship vs trade school — which path did you take?

Want to get into plumbing. I've been researching and it seems like there are two main paths:

  1. Trade school (6-12 months, costs $5,000-15,000, then find a job)
  2. Apprenticeship (find a company, start as a helper, learn on the job)

Which did y'all do? I'm leaning toward apprenticeship because I don't want to take on debt when I could be earning from day one. But some people say trade school gives you a foundation that makes you more valuable.

Located in Arlington if it matters.
