Pecan Lodge has been the most famous BBQ spot in Dallas for a decade. But is it still worth it? I went last weekend to find out.
The visit:
- Saturday, 11:30 AM arrival
- Wait: 35 minutes (shorter than I expected)
- Ordered: Hot Mess (brisket, sausage, jalapeño), beef rib, banana pudding
The food:
- Brisket: Still excellent. Moist, perfectly smoked, good bark. Maybe not the absolute best in DFW anymore, but top 3.
- The Hot Mess: This is the reason to come. The combination of brisket, sausage, mac, beans, and jalapeño in one container is chaos and it works.
- Beef rib: Massive. Perfectly rendered fat. This is their best item and it is only available on weekends.
- Banana pudding: Top tier. Rich, creamy, fresh.
The verdict: Yes, still worth it. Is it the undisputed #1 like it was in 2016? No. Cattleack and Terry Black's have closed the gap. But Pecan Lodge is still elite and the Hot Mess is unique to them.
Value: $25-35 per person depending on what you order. Not cheap, but reasonable for top-tier BBQ.

Pecan Lodge walked so every other Deep Ellum restaurant could run. Respect the institution even if it is not your current #1.
