Patrick Mahomes is on pace to be the GOAT QB: A statistical comparison to Brady and Montana

Patrick Mahomes is accumulating achievements at a rate that makes a legitimate case for the greatest quarterback of all time. Let us compare the numbers at the same career stage.

By age 28 (Source: Pro Football Reference):

  • Mahomes: 3 Super Bowl wins, 3 Super Bowl MVPs, 2 league MVPs
  • Tom Brady at 28: 3 Super Bowl wins, 2 Super Bowl MVPs, 0 league MVPs
  • Joe Montana at 28: 2 Super Bowl wins, 1 Super Bowl MVP, 0 league MVPs

Passing stats through first 7 seasons (Mahomes vs. Brady vs. Montana):

  • Mahomes: 200+ touchdowns, passer rating consistently above 100
  • Brady through 7 seasons: Fewer touchdowns, lower passer rating (different era, but the gap is significant even with era adjustment)
  • Montana through 7 seasons: Similar era adjustment shows Montana was elite but Mahomes' volume is unprecedented

The argument for Mahomes:

  • No quarterback in NFL history has 3 Super Bowl wins and 3 Super Bowl MVPs by age 28. Nobody is close.
  • His no-look passes, sidearm throws, and scramble plays have changed how the position is played.
  • Andy Reid's system maximizes his talent, but Mahomes makes plays that no system can design.

The argument for patience:

  • Brady won 7 Super Bowls over 23 years. Longevity is the ultimate separator.
  • Mahomes' early-career pace may not be sustainable. Injuries, roster changes, and salary cap constraints will test him.
  • Montana played in a 14-game regular season and 3-round playoff format. Context matters.

Three Super Bowl MVPs by 28 is absurd. Brady is the GOAT by longevity. Mahomes is the GOAT by peak. If Mahomes plays until 40, it will not be a debate.

You cannot compare eras directly. Montana played in a league where you could legally destroy quarterbacks. Brady and Mahomes have benefited from rule changes that protect passers.

The plays Mahomes makes that are not in the stat sheet -- the no-look passes, the behind-the-back flips, the plays where he is falling down and still throws a strike. Nobody has ever done that.

Brady has 7 rings. Call me when Mahomes has 7. Until then, Brady is the GOAT and it is not close.
