Catalytic converter thefts spiking in Richardson — 7 reports this week alone

Richardson PD confirmed 7 catalytic converter thefts reported this week, mostly in apartments along Campbell Road.

Most targeted vehicles:

  • Toyota Prius (2004-2009 have the most valuable converters)
  • Honda CRV
  • Ford F-150/F-250
  • Toyota Tacoma

When it's happening: Between 2-5 AM based on security camera footage.

Protect yourself:

  • Park in a garage or well-lit area
  • Install a catalytic converter shield ($150-300, worth it)
  • CatClamp or CatStrap security cables
  • Get your VIN etched onto the converter (makes it harder to sell)
  • Motion-activated driveway lights

If it happens to you:

  • File a police report (you'll need it for insurance)
  • Your car will start and sound like a race car with no muffler
  • Replacement cost: $1,000-3,000 depending on vehicle

These crews hit an area hard for 1-2 weeks then move on. Stay alert.

RPD told our apartment complex they are increasing patrols in the Campbell corridor. We will see if it helps.

Replacement for my Prius converter was $2,800 at the dealer. Insurance covered it minus the $500 deductible. Still a pain.

CatClamp saved mine. They tried and the alarm went off. Could see them on my Ring camera giving up and moving to the next car.

They hit my apartment complex on Campbell near 75 last Tuesday. Got 3 Priuses in one night. In and out in under 2 minutes per car on camera.
