Coyote sighting warning: pack spotted near schools in Plano

A pack of 3-4 coyotes has been spotted multiple times near Hughston Elementary and Jasper High School in west Plano.

Sightings:

  • Monday 6:30 AM: spotted crossing Legacy near the school
  • Tuesday 7 PM: seen near the baseball fields behind Jasper
  • Wednesday 5:45 AM: pack of 4 running through Spring Creek Trail near Coit

Why this matters:

  • These are near schools where kids walk and wait for buses
  • Coyotes can be aggressive toward small children and pets
  • Spring is denning season — they're more territorial and defensive

Safety tips (from Plano Animal Services):

  • Don't leave pet food or water outside
  • Secure trash cans with bungee cords or locking lids
  • Keep small dogs and cats inside, especially at dawn and dusk
  • If you see a coyote, make yourself big and loud. Don't run.
  • Carry a walking stick or umbrella on early morning walks

Not trying to cause panic, but parents of kids at these schools should know.

Parents at Hughston: the school is aware and has added a staff member to morning arrival monitoring near the back entrance.

Plano Animal Services said they wont trap or relocate them. The solution is hazing — making noise, throwing things, making them afraid of humans.

Coyotes are all over DFW, people just dont realize it. They live in every creek corridor and green belt.

Seen them on the Spring Creek Trail near Coit too. Was walking my small dog at 6 AM and they were just standing in the trail watching us. Turned around immediately.
