Moved to DFW specifically for Toyota's Plano headquarters. 3 years in, here's the real story.
The good:
- Campus is beautiful. 100 acres, on-site fitness center, cafeteria, dry cleaning, Starbucks
- Benefits are elite: pension (yes, pension in 2026), 401K match up to 6%, medical/dental/vision all excellent
- Toyota Financial Services and Toyota Connected offer tech-adjacent roles with great comp
- Plano location means affordable housing compared to Austin/Bay Area
- Company culture emphasizes work-life balance. Most people leave by 5:30.
The bad:
- Bureaucracy is DEEP. Decision-making is slow. If you want startup speed, this isn't it.
- Promotion timeline is rigid. 3-4 year cycles regardless of performance.
- "Toyota Way" philosophy means consensus-driven everything. Good for quality. Frustrating for ambitious individuals.
- Plano campus is isolated. Nothing walkable. You drive to your car, drive to the office, drive to lunch.
