ER vs Urgent Care vs Telehealth in DFW: When to go where

Going to the wrong place for the wrong issue costs you money and time. Here's the guide.

GO TO THE ER (call 911 if life-threatening):

  • Chest pain, difficulty breathing
  • Stroke symptoms (FAST: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 911)
  • Severe bleeding that won't stop
  • Broken bones with visible deformity
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
  • Overdose or poisoning
  • High fever in infants under 3 months

Best DFW ERs (by wait time and quality):

  • Baylor University Medical Center (Dallas) — excellent cardiac and stroke care.
  • Texas Health Harris Methodist (Fort Worth) — Fort Worth's premier ER.

GO TO URGENT CARE:

  • Sprains, minor fractures
  • Flu/cold that needs evaluation
  • Minor cuts needing stitches
  • UTIs, ear infections, pink eye
  • X-rays needed same day
  • Cost: $50-200 with insurance (vs $500-5,000+ ER)

Good DFW urgent care options:

  • CareNow (multiple) — HCA Healthcare network. Good hours. Source: carenow.com
  • MinuteClinic at CVS — basic issues only but convenient and cheap.

USE TELEHEALTH:

  • Mental health check-ins
  • Basic cold/flu when you just need a note for work
  • Most insurance covers telehealth visits now at $0-25 copay.
