New to Texas: How to register your car, get a Texas license, and not get fined

Texas gives you 30 days after establishing residency to register your vehicle and get a Texas driver's license. Here's the step-by-step so you don't get caught.

Driver's License (do this FIRST)

  • Go to a DPS Mega Center (not a regular DPS office — Mega Centers are faster)
  • Garland Mega Center and Carrollton Mega Center are the best in DFW
  • Book online at dps.texas.gov — walk-ins wait 2-3 hours, appointments wait 15 minutes
  • Bring: out-of-state license, passport or birth certificate, 2 proofs of residency (utility bill, lease), Social Security card
  • You'll take a quick vision test. No written or driving test if you have a valid out-of-state license.
  • Cost: $33 for a standard license

Vehicle Registration

  • Get a Texas vehicle inspection FIRST at any inspection station ($7.50 for gasoline, $25.50 includes emissions in DFW)
  • Then go to your county tax office (NOT the DPS)
  • Bring: out-of-state title, proof of insurance (Texas minimum: 30/60/25), inspection report, driver's license
  • Cost: varies by vehicle value, typically $50-100
  • Dallas County: dallascounty.org/department/tax
  • Tarrant County: access.tarrantcounty.com

Insurance minimums in Texas:

  • 30/60/25: $30K per person bodily injury, $60K per accident, $25K property damage
  • This is the MINIMUM. Most agents recommend 100/300/100 for real protection.
  • Uninsured motorist coverage is critical — Texas has one of the highest uninsured driver rates in the country (14.1%. Source: IRC)

Vehicle inspection stickers:

  • Texas eliminated the separate inspection sticker in 2015
  • Your registration IS your inspection — you must pass inspection to register
  • Annual inspections required

Penalties for not registering:

  • $200+ ticket for expired registration
  • Your out-of-state plates make you a target for police stops after 30 days

Texas insurance is surprisingly cheap compared to most states. I pay less here for better coverage than I did in Michigan.

I waited 60 days and got pulled over in Plano. $200 ticket. Don't be like me. Do it within 30 days.

The Mega Center appointment trick saved me 3 hours. Garland Mega Center, 8 AM appointment, in and out in 20 minutes.

lol nah

Get your inspection done at a Kwik Kar or similar chain. Takes 15 minutes. Then go to the county tax office. Do NOT go to DPS for registration.

commenting so i can find this later
