Fort Worth food scene deserves more respect: A guide from the other side of the metroplex

Dallas gets all the food press but Fort Worth is holding its own. Here's your guide to eating in Cowtown.

The icons:

  • Joe T. Garcia's (2201 N Commerce St) — The patio. That's it. That's the draw. Enchiladas and fajitas, cash only, no menu. The margaritas are legendary. Been here since 1935.
  • Heim Barbecue (multiple, best at 1109 W Magnolia Ave) — Bacon burnt ends invented here. Line up early.
  • Rodeo Goat (2836 Bledsoe St, Near Southside) — Best burger in DFW. The Big Bubba with green chile and fried egg: $14.

Near Southside / Magnolia Ave:

  • Ellerbe Fine Foods (1501 W Magnolia Ave) — Farm-to-table. Fried chicken on Sundays.
  • Lili's Bistro (1310 W Magnolia Ave) — French-Southern fusion. Date night quality.
  • Avoca Coffee (1311 W Magnolia Ave) — Best coffee in Fort Worth.

Stockyards area:

  • Cattlemen's Steakhouse (2458 N Main St) — Tourist-y but the steak is legit. T-bone: $36.
  • Lonesome Dove Western Bistro (2406 N Main St) — Tim Love's flagship. Kangaroo loin on the menu. Wild game done right.
