Not all free WiFi is created equal. I tested speeds and vibes at 15 spots.
Tier 1 — Fast, reliable, stay all day:
- Dallas Public Library — Main Branch (downtown) — 200+ Mbps, quiet floors, outlets everywhere. Free. Source: dallaslibrary.org
- Fort Worth Central Library — stunning building, fast WiFi, cafe inside. Source: fortworthtexas.gov/library
- WeWork common areas (Uptown, Legacy West) — technically members only but the lobbies are open and WiFi reaches.
Tier 2 — Good for 2-3 hours:
- Houndstooth Coffee (multiple) — reliable WiFi, great espresso, respectful of laptop workers.
- Opening Bell Coffee (Oak Cliff) — fast WiFi, big tables, plugs available. Local favorite.
- Summer Moon (multiple) — Moon Milk is addictive. WiFi is solid at most locations.
Tier 3 — Fine in a pinch:
- Starbucks (any) — 50-80 Mbps typically. Gets crowded. No outlet guarantee.
- Panera — decent WiFi, 30-min sessions but refreshable. Food is overpriced.
- Whole Foods (Park Lane, Colleyville) — good WiFi, upstairs seating at some locations.
Speed test results (Speedtest.net, weekday afternoon): | Location | Download | Upload | |----------|----------|--------| | Dallas Main Library | 225 Mbps | 45 Mbps | | Houndstooth (Sylvan) | 95 Mbps | 22 Mbps | | Starbucks (avg) | 62 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
