It happens constantly in DFW. If you come out to a busted window or rifled-through car, here's the exact procedure.
Step 1: Don't touch anything. If the car is still at the scene, leave it as-is for the police report.
Step 2: Call the non-emergency line.
- Dallas PD: 214-671-4444
- Fort Worth PD: 817-392-4222
- Or file online at your city's PD website. DPD has an online reporting portal for property crimes.
Step 3: Document everything.
- Photograph the damage (broken glass, pry marks)
- List every stolen item with serial numbers if possible
- Check if nearby businesses have security cameras
Step 4: File the police report. You need the case number for insurance. Under Texas Transportation Code Section 550.062, you are required to report the theft of items over $50 from a vehicle.
Step 5: File an insurance claim. Comprehensive coverage covers break-ins (minus deductible). Liability-only does NOT.
Step 6: Prevent it next time.
- NEVER leave anything visible in the car. Not a bag, not a cable, nothing.
- Park in well-lit areas or garages
- Consider a dashcam with parking mode (Viofo A129 Plus, ~$130)
Legal note: Under Texas Penal Code 30.04, burglary of a vehicle is a Class A misdemeanor (up to $4,000 fine and 1 year in jail). If a firearm is stolen from the vehicle, you MUST report it under Texas law.

Keep nothing visible. Seriously. Not even loose change.
Dashcam with parking mode is the move. My Viofo caught the guy on camera. DPD still didn't do anything but at least I had footage for insurance.
