Bike theft is one of the most underreported crimes in DFW. Here's what the data shows.
Hotspots (DPD data 2025):
- Deep Ellum — 142 reported thefts
- Uptown/McKinney Ave — 98
- Downtown Dallas/Arts District — 87
- White Rock Lake area — 63
- Katy Trail trailheads — 54
Recovery rate: Less than 5% of stolen bikes are recovered. Source: DPD property crime division.
Prevention:
- U-lock, not cable lock. Cable locks can be cut in 5 seconds with bolt cutters. A quality U-lock (Kryptonite New York Standard, ~$80) takes power tools.
- Lock through the frame, not just the wheel. Wheels are quick-release. Lock the frame to a fixed object.
- Register your bike. BikeIndex.org (free) and Project 529 (free) are national registries. Record your serial number.
- Take a photo with the serial number visible. This is your proof of ownership.
- GPS tracker. Apple AirTag ($29) hidden under the seat or in the frame. Low-cost insurance.
If your bike is stolen:
- File a police report (online at dallaspolice.net)
- Report it on BikeIndex.org (alerts local bike shops)
- Search Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, and Craigslist daily for 2 weeks
- Alert local bike shops (they often see stolen bikes come through)

If you commute by bike in Dallas, a good U-lock is not optional.
