UNT football: The sleeping giant of DFW college sports

The University of North Texas is the largest university in DFW by enrollment. Over 47,000 students. And yet, their football program remains an afterthought in the metroplex. Here is why that could change.

Current state:

  • Conference: American Athletic Conference (AAC)
  • Stadium: DATCU Stadium (Apogee Stadium renamed), 30,850 capacity in Denton
  • The Mean Green have had stretches of strong play, including Conference USA championships.
  • Source: UNT Athletics.

Why UNT could rise:

  1. Enrollment. 47,000+ students means a massive potential fanbase. If even 20% engaged with football, DATCU Stadium would be full every Saturday.
  2. Location. Denton is 35 miles north of Dallas. The DFW metroplex has 8 million people. The recruiting ground is right there.
  3. AAC membership. A step up from Conference USA. Better opponents, more TV exposure, increased revenue.
  4. Facilities investment. The university has invested in football facilities over the past several years.

Why UNT has struggled:

  1. Competition. DFW has the Cowboys, Mavs, Rangers, Stars, TCU, and now SMU in the ACC. UNT is competing for attention in the most crowded sports market in Texas.
  2. Commuter school culture. Many UNT students commute and do not stay on campus for Saturday games.
  3. Football tradition. It is hard to build tradition when the program has had limited sustained success at the national level.

The 12-team playoff angle: Expansion means an undefeated AAC champion could make the College Football Playoff. That changes everything for programs like UNT. One magical season could transform the program for a decade.
