The average DFW commute is 28 minutes one way. Source: US Census Bureau. Here's how to make it less miserable.
Route optimization:
- Waze over Google Maps. Waze catches real-time incidents faster in DFW. Set departure time alerts.
- Learn the service roads. In DFW, most highways have parallel frontage/service roads. When the highway locks up, exit and use them.
- I-35E alternative: Jupiter Rd or Coit Rd run parallel through Richardson/Plano. Slower but predictable.
- DNT alternative: Preston Rd for the entire length. Traffic lights but no tolls.
- I-30 alternative: Davis St or Jefferson Blvd through Oak Cliff for east-west.
Timing (avoid these windows):
- Morning: 7:15-8:45 AM (worst at 7:45)
- Evening: 4:30-6:30 PM (worst at 5:15)
- Friday 3:00 PM: DFW shuts down. Just accept it.
DART (if your route allows it):
- Red/Blue lines from Plano/Richardson to downtown Dallas. $2.50/ride, $5 day pass. Source: dart.org
- TRE (Trinity Railway Express) from Fort Worth to Dallas. $2.50-5.00. Source: trinityrailwayexpress.org
- TEXRail from Fort Worth to DFW Airport. $2.50. Source: ridetrinitymetro.org/texrail
Work-from-home leverage:
- If your job offers hybrid, optimize your in-office days for Tue/Wed/Thu. Mon and Fri traffic is lighter.
Sanity savers:
- Podcast backlog: The DFW commute is where you'll finally finish those 2-hour episodes.
- Audiobooks: Libby app + a DFW library card = free audiobooks. Source: dallaslibrary.org or fortworthlibrary.org
