DFW vehicle inspection and registration guide: Don't get caught with expired tags

Texas vehicle registration and inspection can trip you up if you're new or forgetful.

Annual inspection:

  • Any certified inspection station (look for the official state inspection sign).

New to Texas? You have 90 days:

  • You'll need: out-of-state title, proof of insurance, VIN verification, Texas inspection.
  • Total cost to transfer: $90-150 depending on vehicle.

Common gotchas:

  • Driving with expired registration is a Class C misdemeanor. Up to $200 fine.

  • Paper plates are valid for 60 days from purchase. After that, you need permanent plates.
