New to Texas? You have 90 days:

- Total cost to transfer: $90-150 depending on vehicle.
Common gotchas:
- Driving with expired registration is a Class C misdemeanor. Up to $200 fine.
- Expired inspection alone is a separate $150+ fine.
- Paper plates are valid for 60 days from purchase. After that, you need permanent plates.
