EV charging in DFW: A practical guide for electric vehicle owners

I drive a Tesla Model 3 in DFW. Here's the real EV experience.

Supercharger locations (Tesla):

  • Plano (Legacy Dr) — 20 stalls, usually available
  • Dallas (Knox/Henderson area) — 12 stalls, gets busy weekday evenings
  • Fort Worth (Hulen area) — 16 stalls, rarely full
  • Frisco (Stonebriar area) — 16 stalls
  • Arlington (near AT&T Stadium) — 12 stalls

Non-Tesla fast charging (CCS):

  • Electrify America — Walmart locations across DFW. 150-350kW. Source: electrifyamerica.com
  • ChargePoint — various DFW locations. Speeds vary. Source: chargepoint.com
  • EVgo — growing in DFW. Several grocery store locations. Source: evgo.com

Free charging:

  • Many DFW malls have free Level 2 chargers (NorthPark, Galleria, Stonebriar)
  • Some workplaces offer free charging (ask your HR)
  • PlugShare app maps every charger including free ones. Source: plugshare.com

Cost comparison (monthly):

  • My electricity cost (home charging): ~$45/month for 1,200 miles
  • Equivalent gas cost for same miles (30mpg, $2.80/gal): ~$112/month
  • Monthly savings: ~$67

DFW-specific EV considerations:

  • Texas has no state EV incentive (unlike California). Federal $7,500 credit still applies for qualifying vehicles. Source: irs.gov
  • Home charging installation: $500-1,500 for 240V outlet. Source: local electrician quotes.
