Car insurance comparison in DFW: What I actually pay and what you should too

DFW car insurance is expensive because we have expensive accidents. Here's the real data.

My comparison (2026, clean record, 2022 Honda Civic, full coverage):

  • GEICO: $142/month
  • State Farm: $156/month
  • Progressive: $131/month
  • USAA (military/family): $118/month
  • Root Insurance (app-based): $125/month

DFW averages (full coverage):

  • Texas average: $168/month. Source: Bankrate 2026 data.
  • DFW metro average: $175-195/month. Higher than state average due to hail, congestion, and uninsured drivers.

Why DFW insurance is expensive:

  1. Hail. Texas is the #1 state for hail damage claims. Source: Insurance Information Institute.
  2. Uninsured drivers. 14% of Texas drivers are uninsured. Source: IRC (Insurance Research Council).
  3. Traffic density. More cars = more accidents. DFW has 7.5 million people and most of them are on 635 at 5:15pm.

How to save:

  • Bundle home/renters + auto (15-25% discount)
  • Raise deductible to $1,000 (most people can absorb this)
  • Dashcam discount: some insurers offer 5-10% for dashcam footage proof
  • Defensive driving course: 10% discount for 3 years in Texas. Source: TDI (Texas Dept of Insurance)
  • Pay 6 months upfront instead of monthly (5-10% savings)

Don't skip:

  • Comprehensive coverage (hail damage alone can total a car in DFW)
  • Uninsured motorist coverage (14% are uninsured, remember?)

Skipping comprehensive in DFW is playing Russian roulette. One hail storm and your car is totaled. Learned the hard way in 2023.

Root Insurance is legit if you're a safe driver. They track via app for the first few weeks then give you a rate. I got $119/month, cheaper than everyone else.

Defensive driving course is 6 hours online for $25 and saves 10% for 3 YEARS. Do the math. Source: texasdefensivedriving.com
