Buying a used car in DFW: How to not get scammed

DFW is one of the largest used car markets in the country. Here's how to navigate it.

Where to buy:

Dealerships (more protection):

  • CarMax (multiple DFW) — no-haggle pricing, 30-day return. Slightly above market but the peace of mind is worth it.
  • Carvana — delivered to your door, 7-day return. Hit or miss on condition. Inspect thoroughly.
  • AutoNation (multiple) — certified pre-owned programs with warranties.
  • Park Place pre-owned — luxury used cars. Reputable DFW dealer. Source: parkplace.com

Private sale (better deals, more risk):

  • Facebook Marketplace — largest pool. Meet in a well-lit public place.
  • Craigslist — still active for cars in DFW. Be careful.
  • Cars.com / Autotrader — better filtering than FB Marketplace.

Before you buy (non-negotiable steps):

  1. CARFAX or AutoCheck report. $40. Check for accidents, title issues, odometer rollbacks. Source: carfax.com
  2. Pre-purchase inspection (PPI). Any independent mechanic will do this for $100-150. Not the seller's mechanic. Yours.
  3. Check the VIN against the NICB stolen vehicle database. Free. Source: nicb.org/vincheck
  4. Texas title check at txdmv.gov to verify the seller owns the car.

Fair pricing:

  • KBB.com and Edmunds.com for fair market value
  • Carvana/CarMax online pricing as a baseline

Scam red flags:

  • Price way below market (if it seems too good...)
  • Seller wants to meet at a random location, not their home
  • "Title is at my other house"
  • Won't let you do a PPI
  • Wants payment in cash or crypto only

Sources:

  • CARFAX, AutoCheck for vehicle history
  • NICB.org for stolen vehicle check
  • TxDMV.gov for title verification
  • KBB.com and Edmunds.com for pricing
