Golden Gloves in DFW — the history and how to compete

the Golden Gloves is the most prestigious amateur boxing tournament in the United States and DFW has one of the strongest programs in the country. if you want to compete in boxing, this is where your journey starts.

what is the Golden Gloves:

• founded in 1923, the Golden Gloves is the oldest and largest amateur boxing tournament in the US
• the Texas Golden Gloves (state level) feeds into the National Golden Gloves (national championship)
• every great American boxer came through the Golden Gloves: Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather
• the DFW regional is one of the most competitive in Texas

how to compete:

1. you must be registered with USA Boxing (annual membership ~$75)
2. you need a minimum of 10 supervised sparring sessions logged by your coach
3. your coach registers you for the regional tournament
4. you compete in your weight class and experience level (novice vs open)
5. win regionals → advance to state → advance to nationals

what to expect:

• amateur boxing is 3 rounds of 3 minutes (seniors). headgear is no longer required for adults since 2013
• scoring is based on clean punches landed. its point boxing, not slug fests
• the atmosphere at Golden Gloves events is incredible. packed gyms, families cheering, raw emotion
• win or lose your first fight changes you. stepping through the ropes for real is a life experience
