BJJ / Jiu-Jitsu

cost of BJJ in DFW — what are yall paying? $150-200/month seems standard but some places $250+

did some research on BJJ pricing across DFW because i was curious if im getting ripped off or not. here is what ive found from calling around and talking to people:

budget tier ($100-140/month):

  • some Octagon MMA locations (depends on contract)
  • smaller independent gyms in the suburbs
  • limited schedule memberships (2x/week)

standard tier ($150-200/month):

  • Mohler MMA — around $150-180 depending on contract length
  • Gracie Barra Dallas — approximately $170-200 (plus you buy GB gear)
  • Alliance Dallas — similar range
  • most mid-size gyms in DFW fall here

premium tier ($200-250+/month):

  • some competition-focused gyms
  • unlimited everything including MMA, striking, wrestling
  • Lovato BJJ (worth every penny for what you get)
  • Fortis MMA (but youre training with UFC caliber athletes)

hidden costs nobody talks about:

  • gis: $80-200 each and you need at least 2, ideally 3
  • nogi gear: rash guards ($40-80), fight shorts ($30-60)
  • competition entry fees: $60-150 per tournament
  • tape, knee braces, mouth guard: $50+ per year
  • the inevitable "seminar with visiting black belt" thats $75 but your coach guilts you into going
  • Gracie Barra specific: patches, ranked rash guards, required GB gi ($150+)

the math: if you train 4x/week at $175/month thats about $10 per class. for private instruction quality in a group setting, thats actually insane value compared to most sports and hobbies.

but real talk: some places are overcharging for mediocre instruction and riding the BJJ hype wave. dont pay $250/month for a gym with no competition team and a black belt who got his belt from an unverifiable lineage.

what are you paying and do you feel like its worth it?

the GB gear requirement is the thing that bothers me most. i already own 4 gis that i love. being forced to buy a $160 Gracie Barra gi with patches feels like a cash grab even if the instruction is solid

pro tip: most gyms will negotiate if you ask. sign a yearly contract, pay upfront, or bring a friend who signs up. ive gotten $20-30/month off just by asking
