been training for about 8 months and i want to compete but im overwhelmed by the options. can people who have actually competed break down the differences?
from what ive gathered:
NAGA (North American Grappling Association)
- cheaper entry ($80-100)
- same day weigh ins (less stressful)
- matches can be gi or nogi
- rule set is a bit more relaxed
- tends to be less intimidating atmosphere
- they come through DFW several times a year
IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation)
- more expensive ($120-150+)
- stricter rules and gi requirements
- the "official" competitive standard
- annual membership required ($40)
- more competitive field typically
- DFW Open is usually in the spring
local Smoothcomp tournaments
- cheapest ($40-60)
- smallest brackets but friendliest atmosphere
- various DFW gyms host them throughout the year
- great for first timers
my questions:
- which one should a white belt with 8 months experience do FIRST?
- what weight class do i pick if im between two?
- how many matches will i likely get?
- anyone got recommendations for specific upcoming tournaments in DFW?
- how do you deal with the nerves? i roll fine in practice but the idea of competing makes me want to puke
coach says im ready but i dont FEEL ready. is that normal?
NAGA is the standard first tournament for most people. its well organized and the white belt divisions are usually big so youll get multiple matches. the same-day weigh in is also way less stressful than IBJJF
