Austin minor league sports you are sleeping on: Spurs, Gilgronis, Express

Austin has more sports options than UT and Austin FC. The minor league scene is fun, cheap, and worth your time.

Austin Spurs (NBA G-League):

  • Formerly the San Antonio Spurs' G-League affiliate, now playing in Austin. The H-E-B Center at Cedar Park is the venue.
  • Why go: You're watching future NBA players for $15. Some of these guys will be on NBA rosters next year.
  • Vibe: Family-friendly. The promotions between quarters are cheesy in the best way. Kids love it.

Austin Gilgronis (Major League Rugby):

  • Play at Dell Diamond in Round Rock. Rugby is growing in Austin and the Gilgronis are competitive.
  • Why go: If you've never watched rugby live, it's violent and fast and exciting. Tickets start at $20.
  • Tailgating is encouraged. The parking lot scene before matches has a chill, community feel.

Round Rock Express (AAA Baseball):

  • Texas Rangers' AAA affiliate. Dell Diamond is a beautiful ballpark.
  • Why go: $10 tickets, $5 beer nights, lazy summer evenings watching baseball. It's relaxing in a way that major league sports are not.
  • The Friday fireworks shows after games draw huge crowds.

The value proposition: A family of four at a UT football game: $400+. A family of four at a Round Rock Express game: $60 including food. The math is obvious.

Minor league sports are the cheat code for families. You get the live sports experience without selling a kidney for tickets.

Austin Spurs games are where you go to say "I watched that guy before he was famous." Saw Keldon Johnson play in Cedar Park before his NBA career took off.

The Gilgronis rugby matches are surprisingly fun. I went as a complete rugby novice and was hooked by halftime. The physicality is insane.

Dell Diamond on a Friday night in June is perfection. $10 ticket, $5 beer, fireworks after the game, my kid catches a foul ball. That's a $50 evening for three people.
