Austin claims to have the best breakfast tacos in Texas. San Antonio disagrees. The Valley disagrees harder. But Austin's breakfast taco scene IS elite. Here's the ranking.
S Tier:
- Veracruz All Natural (multiple) — The migas taco is the single best breakfast taco in Austin. Crispy tortilla strips, eggs, cheese, avocado on a handmade flour tortilla. The truck on East Cesar Chavez is the original. James Beard Award winner.
- Joe's Bakery (East 7th) — Old Austin. Been there since 1962. The carne guisada breakfast taco is the most Austin taco that exists. If you haven't eaten here, you haven't eaten Austin.
A Tier:
- Tamale House East (East Cesar Chavez) — The migas plate, not just the taco. Big portions, handmade tortillas, outdoor seating, and a feeling of old Austin that's rapidly disappearing.
- Juan in a Million (East Cesar Chavez) — The Don Juan taco is a monster. Eggs, bacon, potato, cheese in a massive flour tortilla. It's famous for a reason.
B Tier (good, not great):
- Tacodeli — Good. Not amazing. The Otto taco with the dona sauce is their signature. More of a yuppie taco spot than an authentic one.
- Torchy's — I will die on this hill: Torchy's is a bar that happens to serve tacos. The food is fun but calling it the best breakfast taco in Austin is an insult to Veracruz, Joe's, and every abuela on the East Side.
The rule: If the tortilla is pre-made, it's not a top-tier taco. Handmade flour tortilla is the baseline. Everything else is a burrito filling in a wrapper.

The tortilla test is everything. You can taste the difference between handmade and pre-made in one bite. There's no faking it.
