BBQ beyond Franklin: Austin spots with no line that are still excellent

Franklin is great. The line is not. Here are Austin BBQ spots where you walk in, order, and eat within 15 minutes.

The no-wait elite:

  • la Barbecue (East Cesar Chavez) — Some line but nothing like Franklin. 30 minutes max on weekends. The brisket is 90% as good. The beef ribs on Saturday are massive and perfect.
  • Micklethwait Craft Meats (East Side) — Hidden behind a building. The smoked turkey is the best in Austin. Brisket is excellent. Short line or no line on weekdays.
  • Leroy & Lewis (South Lamar) — New-school BBQ truck. The beef cheeks and brisket burger are creative and outstanding.

The under-the-radar picks:

  • Valentina's Tex-Mex BBQ (Manchaca Rd) — BBQ + Tex-Mex fusion. The Fat Boy brisket breakfast taco is the most Austin food item that exists. Part BBQ joint, part taqueria.
  • Stiles Switch (North Lamar) — Walk-up counter service, no crazy line. The sausage is house-made and the sides are above average.
  • Kerlin BBQ (East Cesar Chavez) — Small operation with big flavors. Their pork belly is a sleeper item.

The daily lunch move: Micklethwait or Stiles Switch on a Tuesday. In and out in 10 minutes. Brisket, two sides, tea. $18. That's better BBQ than 95% of the country without losing half your day.

Stiles Switch for a weekday lunch is the hack. Great BBQ, no line, in and out. Franklin is a weekend pilgrimage. Stiles Switch is real life.

Valentina's Fat Boy taco is life-changing. Brisket, egg, cheese, potato, salsa in a flour tortilla. It shouldn't work that well but it does.

la Barbecue beef ribs on Saturday are the best single BBQ item in Austin. Yes, better than Franklin. The rib is massive and the flavor is unreal.

Micklethwait smoked turkey is the sleeper pick. People skip turkey at BBQ joints but this one is moist, smoky, and better than the brisket at most places.
