the DFW club wrestling scene deserves a ton of credit. clubs like some of the ones in the north dallas suburbs are producing kids who are technically sound before they even get to high school. the feeder system is building
the PAL boxing programs in south dallas and fort worth saved lives. not an exaggeration. kids who would have been on the streets were in the gym learning discipline and getting direction. those programs are national treasures
Fort Worth side has some hidden gems that nobody talks about. Worth the drive.
trim your nails should be in bold and underlined. got scratched across the face by a new white belt last week. welcome to class buddy now go cut those talons
the middle ground is POSITIONAL SPARRING and i genuinely believe its the most effective training method in BJJ. start in a specific position, work that position live, reset. you get the live resistance of rolling with the specificity of drilling. more gyms need to do this
congrats man. the crying at promotion is universal. i have literally never seen someone get promoted past blue belt without getting emotional. this sport changes your life and the belt is the physical proof
congrats on purple!! thats a huge milestone. i got my brown belt last month at Lovato BJJ and it still doesnt feel real. 7 years in the making. purple to brown was the hardest stretch because the expectations are so high

The property tax angle alone makes this worth following.
the MMA to wrestling pipeline is real. half the kids who join the wrestling team at our school started because they watch UFC. they come for the MMA hype and stay because wrestling itself is addictive
This is exactly why I love this platform. Real DFW conversations.

Can someone from the north side weigh in? Curious if it's the same up there.
Important for Houston residents to be aware of this.
Real talk right here. No sugarcoating.
the "sign up for the next one" advice is critical. the first tournament is always the worst because everything is unknown. the second one you know the logistics, the adrenaline, the format. it gets better every time. just keep competing
the Islam Makhachev model is the answer to this debate. sambo/wrestling base + BJJ submission skills = the most dominant fighter alive. you need both but wrestling is the foundation
IBJJF gi requirements are strict. they measure your gi sleeves, pants, collar thickness. ive seen people get sent home because their gi didnt pass inspection. buy an IBJJF-approved gi and check it before the tournament. NAGA doesnt care as much
Fort Worth side has some hidden gems that nobody talks about. Worth the drive.
best take: train MMA. not wrestling for MMA or BJJ for MMA. train actual MMA where you learn to integrate everything. the specialization debate is outdated when modern MMA camps teach it all together
Real talk right here. No sugarcoating.
Stay safe out there, San Antonio. Good to stay informed.
the brain damage concern for striking arts is valid and responsible. the key is finding a gym that emphasizes light technical sparring (80%+ of sparring sessions) rather than hard sparring every session. the gym culture around sparring intensity matters more than the art itself
always go UP a weight class for your first tournament. cutting weight adds unnecessary stress. you want to focus on competing not on starving yourself for 3 days before
Not something I expected to read today but glad I did.
