Gunshots or fireworks? How to tell the difference and when to call 911
This question comes up constantly in DFW neighborhood groups, especially around holidays. Here's how to tell.
- Gunshots: Sharp, short, consistent volume. Rapid succession if semi-auto. Single loud crack if shotgun/rifle. No echo pattern — just a flat "pop" or "crack."
- Gunshots: Usually 1-8 rapid-fire shots, then silence. May be followed by tire screeching or yelling.
- Fireworks: Prolonged display lasting minutes. Multiple types of explosions. Often visible in the sky.
