I just accept that summer electric bills are $300+ and budget accordingly. It's the Texas tax nobody mentions.
Trades. HVAC, plumbing, electrical. Most will hire you with zero experience and train you. Starting pay is $18-22/hr but within 2-3 years you're at $30+. Texas needs tradespeople badly.
My kids go to Coyle Middle School now, which was renovated after the tornado. Every year in December the school does a remembrance moment. The younger kids do not fully understand but the teachers who were here make sure the story is told.
Wait until someone waves you through a 4-way stop when they got there first. Texas politeness actually slows down traffic lol
The driving thing never stops being true. I live half a mile from a CVS and still drive there. It's 105 outside man I'm not walking.
Unpopular opinion: corn tortilla breakfast tacos are superior. Flour gets soggy too fast if you're taking them to go.
Brace for the first time someone invites you to a backyard BBQ and it turns into a 7 hour event with 40 people you've never met.
Property taxes are the real killer. No income tax sounds great until you realize you pay 2.5% of your home value every year. That adds up FAST on a 400k house.
Texas pride. I've never lived anywhere where people fly the state flag more than the US flag. And they're not being ironic about it.
It depends where you came from. My friends in California still pay double what I pay for everything. Texas is expensive compared to 2019 Texas, but cheap compared to a lot of other places.
The bathroom thing alone justifies its existence. After driving 3 hours on a Texas highway I would pay $5 just for a clean bathroom. The food is a bonus.
Check your city and county job boards directly. Government jobs don't always post on Indeed. The benefits package is usually better than private sector even if the pay is slightly lower.
The sidewalk thing is real. I live in Liberty Grove and my kids cannot ride bikes to their friend's house two streets over because there is no sidewalk and the road has no shoulder. We drive them. In Waterview everything is connected.
Hill Country in the spring is unbeatable. Fredericksburg for wineries, Enchanted Rock for hiking, and the wildflowers on the roadside are insane in April.
Our summer water bill last year was $230 and we don't even have a pool. It's the irrigation. I'm seriously considering converting the front yard to xeriscaping.
Paper plates = no insurance and possibly no registration. And they drive like it because they know they can't be traced. Biggest problem on Texas roads right now.
Got dashcam footage that could fill a YouTube channel. Front and rear cameras are mandatory equipment in this state as far as I'm concerned.
I went to the city council meeting in February. The developer seemed confident but the timeline has slipped at least three times now. The council asked tough questions which I appreciated.
This hits different if you've been in DFW for 10+ years.
Port Aransas for a cheap beach trip. Not the prettiest beach in the world but the vibe is chill, the fishing is good, and hotels are way cheaper than Galveston.
If the spot doesn't have a line of construction workers at 6am it's probably not that good. That's my filter.
Tex-Mex is not Mexican food and nobody who grew up eating both would confuse them. Both are good. They're just different cuisines at this point.
I stop every time I see one and I'm not sorry. The kolaches are solid, the bathrooms are spotless, and the beaver nuggets are crack.
Does anyone know if there's an update on this? Asking for my neighborhood.
The merge thing is the real danger. Who taught people to merge at 40mph onto a 75mph highway? That's how accidents happen.
