Sober nightlife in DFW: What to do when you don't drink
Not everyone drinks. Here's how to have a great night out in DFW without alcohol.
- Cidercade (Deep Ellum) — $12 unlimited arcade games. BYOB but plenty of people don't drink. The games are the point. Source: cidercade.com
- Free Play (Richardson, Arlington, Denton) — same concept, vintage arcade. Full bar but arcade-focused. Source: freeplayinc.com
- Bowlounge (Design District) — bowling + good food. You can order non-alcoholic cocktails.
UT campus area guide: Where to live, eat, and hang out around the Forty Acres
The UT campus area (West Campus, North Campus, and the Drag) is its own world. Here's the guide whether you're a student, staff, or just want to visit.
- Dense apartment complexes. Most UT students live here. Walking distance to campus.
- Rent: $1,200-1,800/mo for a 1BR in a newer building. Older units can be found for $900-1,100.
- Party scene is concentrated on Nueces, San Gabriel, and West Ave. Thursday through Saturday is loud.
Galleria area survival guide: Working, shopping, and not losing your mind in traffic
The Galleria area is the second downtown of Houston. Massive office towers, the Galleria Mall, Uptown Park, and the worst traffic in the entire city. Here's how to deal with it.
- Use the garage on the Nordstrom side (Westheimer entrance). Less crowded than the main entrance off Post Oak.
- Saturday afternoon: don't even try. Go early (before 11 AM) or late (after 7 PM).
- Valet is $10-20 and worth it during holidays.
Best free AI tools in 2026 ranked — I tested 40+ and these are the ones I actually use
There are hundreds of AI tools now. Most are garbage wrappers around the same APIs. Here are the ones that are actually free AND actually useful.
- Most "AI writing assistants" that are just ChatGPT wrappers with a $20/month subscription. Save your money.
- AI resume builders. Just use ChatGPT directly.
- AI personal assistants that do not integrate with anything.
DFW contractor horror stories: How to vet before you hire and what to do when it goes wrong
The post-storm contractor scam cycle in DFW is predictable: hail hits, 500 "roofing companies" appear overnight, half of them vanish with your deposit.
- tdlr.texas.gov — search by license number or name
- Verify their license is active and not expired
- Check for complaints and disciplinary actions
Midtown Houston: Best for young professionals or overrated party district?
Midtown used to be THE spot for Houston's 20-somethings. Bars, clubs, walkable apartments, METRO rail access. But the vibe has shifted.
- Location. It's between downtown and Montrose/Museum District. You can walk or rail to any of them.
- Bars and nightlife. Dogwood, Mongoose vs Cobra, Gaslamp, and dozens more packed into a few blocks.
- Rent is slightly cheaper than the Heights or Montrose. $1,300-1,900 for a 1BR.
Scarborough Renaissance Festival 2026: DFW's weirdest and best tradition
Scarborough Faire is one of the largest Renaissance festivals in the US. It's in Waxahachie (45 min south of Dallas) and it's an experience.
- Dates: Weekends April 4 - May 25, 2026 (Saturdays and Sundays)
- Location: 2511 FM 66, Waxahachie, TX

How I use AI at work without telling my boss — and the ethical gray zone
I am going to be honest about something a lot of white-collar DFW workers are doing but nobody talks about publicly. I use AI for about 40% of my job and my employer has no idea.
- First drafts of internal communications — Claude writes it, I edit for voice and accuracy. What used to take 2 hours takes 20 minutes.
- Presentation outlines and slide copy. I describe the narrative, AI generates the structure, I refine.
- Email drafting for routine correspondence. AI handles the template, I customize.

DFW's craft beer scene has exploded. Here are the breweries worth visiting.

Add yours. I'll start.
- You measure distance in minutes, never miles. "It's about 25 minutes from here."
- You've sat in the Buc-ee's parking lot and questioned all your life choices
- You have strong opinions about which Whataburger location is the best one

Wine bars in DFW for when you want something more civilized
Not every night is a beer-and-shot night. DFW has excellent wine bars.

Texas Pride MMA (Tyler, East Texas) — review for the non-DFW crowd
not everything is in dallas or fort worth. if you are in east texas, Tyler specifically, Texas Pride MMA deserves a look. including this because DFW is the focus but the broader north texas combat sports community extends east.
- small town gym energy with big city quality instruction
- the coaching staff has legit credentials and the gym has produced fighters who have competed at the regional and professional level
- the community feel is stronger than most DFW gyms because the team is smaller. everyone knows everyone

Free coding resources for people in DFW who don't want to pay for a bootcamp
Not everyone has $15K for a bootcamp. Here's what I used to teach myself to code for free while living in DFW:
- freeCodeCamp (web dev curriculum — completely free)
- The Odin Project (full stack — also free)
- Dallas Public Library card gives you free access to LinkedIn Learning, which has coding courses
DFW wedding vendor disasters: How to protect yourself and pursue refunds
Wedding vendor disputes are some of the ugliest consumer fights in DFW. Thousands of dollars on the line and emotions running high.
- Vendor no-shows: File a police report for theft of service (TPC 31.04) if they took payment and didn't show. Then file with TX AG and BBB.
- Substandard work: Document with photos/video. Compare to contract promises. Small claims for damages up to $20K.
- Refund refused: Credit card chargeback within 60 days. Then small claims.
DFW BJJ tournament results thread — share your wins and your lessons
just got back from a local NAGA in DFW. went 3-1 in nogi and 1-1 in gi. lost my gi finals match by advantages which stings but overall a solid day.
- nogi: won first match by RNC, won second by points (7-2), won semis by guillotine, lost finals by split decision that i thought i won but thats competition
- gi: won first match by collar choke from mount, lost second match by points. got my guard passed repeatedly which tells me exactly what i need to work on
- my nogi game is significantly ahead of my gi game. this makes sense because i train nogi 3x/week and gi only 1x/week. the data doesnt lie
Pet-friendly apartments in DFW: Where your pets are actually welcome
Most DFW apartments "allow" pets but the fees and restrictions vary wildly. Here's what I've found.
- The Union Dallas — no breed restrictions, dog wash station, nearby Griggs Park for walks. Pet rent: $25/month. Deposit: $250.
- Gables Republic Tower — dog run on-site. Weight limit: 100lbs. Pet rent: $30/month.
- The Epic Deep Ellum — pet-friendly with dog park on-site. Walking distance to Baylor dog park.
